New works by James Bassi, Martha Sullivan, and Christian Carey, written expressly for this performance were premiered alongside illustrations by New York City artist Brett Helquist, bringing to life these ancient poems in one of New York’s most beautiful churches. Following music by Corigliano, Thomson, and McFerrin, the program concluded with Leonard Bernstein’s luminous Chichester Psalms for choir and instruments, sung in Hebrew.
